The weight of wanting more🧱
vote! desire is never a mistake. community spotlights. you are enough.
Hey everyone!
It’s been two weeks since this letter went out but we should be back to regularly scheduled programming now. I was preoccupied with monitoring Nigeria’s presidential elections and the aftermath - this is a friendly reminder to all who live in Nigeria - please go out and vote for the state elections! Your votes definitely count.
Let’s get into it.
This week in the group chat Onajite asked our usual question ‘what’s your one thing for the week’ and I shared that mine was simply to get to Friday. Other people replied and echoed the same sentiments, there seems to be a collective air of fatigue, overwhelm and maybe stress.
Whilst I might not know the ins and outs of everyone’s situation I wanted to put out a general reminder to say that no matter what you do or don’t do - you’re enough.
I know that personally, a big part of my stress is coming from the fact that I think I should have achieved certain things and made more progress in certain areas than I seemingly have. In other words, I am putting a lot of pressure on myself and unconsciously tying my worth to my achievements. This goes against everything Kumu stands for.
It was this exact thinking that prompted me to start this community in the first place, funny that three years later I am having similar thoughts and having to remind myself that I am worthy simply because I exist.
As these thoughts have taken over my mind, I started wondering if my desires were the issue. Should I stop wanting the things I want? Would my life be easier? I’ve decided that Desire is never a mistake, and that actually learning to be content whilst still holding space for my desires is probably a healthier approach. There is nothing wrong with the things you want (within reason) it just shouldn’t define you if you don’t have them (yet).
This is a note to be kind to yourself and to remind you that you are worthy simply because you exist.
NOW THE FUN STUFF 💜
This is a special community shout-out, in honour of #IWD whilst the commercialisation of this day can feel very superficial- I will always use it as an opportunity to spotlight women and champion our causes! In the future, I hope to put my money where my mouth is.
With that in mind- we are sharing shining a spotlight on three amazing women in our community and their businesses/ventures. Please support them where you can 🎊
